Classic Accessories patio cover and cushion brand was growing rapidly in 2019 with nearly $100 million dollars in revenue for the year. As a result the CEO who had seeded much of the success a decade prior was looking to pivot the patio accessories brand into a patio lifestyle company through the addition of patio furniture, fire pits, lighting and decor. Following that decision in June of 2019, I was given the opportunity to lead design for all hard goods development for the CA brand.
OBJECTIVE
Develop a modular sectional that protects cushions from the elements when not in use.
CONCEPTS
This 'locker style' design is self-containing - meaning each seat has a compartment specially designed to contain and protect the seat cushions when not in use.
The locker style design also presented an opportunity to stow the removable backrest below the cushions. In combination with the telescoping armrests that would retract into the enclosure, the Stoh was able to achieve a very minimal sculptural like appearance when in the stowed configuration.
REVISION
While the telescoping style armrest provided a seamlessly integrated seat system the additional cost and weight of providing an armrest for each Stoh section was not practical and reduced the storage footprint for cushions within the locker. The solution was a slot system in each seat which could secure an optional armrest. This this slot would also serve to keep modular sections attached and aligned with the use of a mating clip.
RESULT
The self-contained cushion storage rivals that of competitors by providing sealed cushion containment as opposed to a cumbersome external cover.
Ideal for cabins and homes in regions with harsh environmental factors. When stowed, the cushions stay completely dry and protected from sun, water, pine needles, leaves, snow, insects and more.

'STOH' CONFIGURATION
Stowed configuration provides a low profile and sculptural appearance. Its lids are rigid allowing them to be used as impromptu bench seating.
ENTERTAIN
Each fully customizable section erects without tools in less two minutes per seat.
